Here’s a preview from The FruitGuys regional produce buyers of the fresh fruits and vegetables being harvested in November by some of our farms. To see what’s being delivered in your box this week, visit fruitguys.com/mix and choose your region.
EAST
We’ve got a wealth of seasonal apple varieties here on the East Coast to chose from. Suncrisp, Stayman, Winesap, Empire, and Nittany––just to name a few. It seems like there’s an apple growing nearby to please every palate. The wonderful little bombs of sugary-goodness that are Pennsylvania Seckel pears are still coming from the farms too; and the specially cultivated varieties of Asian pears grown at the Subarashii Kudamono Farm are going strong. Their flavor, texture, and incredible juiciness are second to none!
The colder temperatures may mean sipping hot cider in your favorite sweater, but it also means a load of great veggies including beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, celery, eggplant, kohlrabi, leeks, onions, parsnips, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, and winter squash!
WEST
Are you ready for citrus season? Look for navel oranges to appear in the first week or two of November, and the Mandarins and specialty citrus will come later in the month. Grapefruit is being picked fresh and has been tasting great in various parts of California––mostly San Diego County and in the San Joaquin Valley.
Most of the apple and pear production has moved up the coast into Washington and Oregon, where you can expect to see heavy availability of all varieties and sizes; locally, we are still seeing some fantastic pomegranates and persimmons.
We’re also seeing all types of root veggies. Squash is coming in strong and all different types have flooded the market. Look out for Brussels sprouts in November as well as a continuous flow of leafy greens like kale and chard coming out of Sebastopol and the Capay Valley.
MIDWEST
More varieties of apples are coming from Mick Klug Farm, Earth First Farms, and Molter Family Orchards! As fall is in full swing, we will continue to see a plethora of winter squash from Genesis Growers and Iron Creek Farm. Reusch Century Farm will provide some AMAZING organic cranberries, and we’ll also have loads of white, blue, red, and sweet potatoes, along with turnips, celeriac, and Brussels sprouts!
SOUTHWEST
Did you know that Arizona is one of the top citrus producing states? It’s a point of pride here, and beginning this month, you’ll find out why as Arizona navels start showing up in your boxes. As the weather cools off, Southwestern farmers can begin to harvest. We’ll be rolling out locally sourced veggies this month as Duncan Family Farms will supply us with beautiful leafy greens like kale, chard, and spinach as well as beets.
